This poem is loosely based on the Hebrew prayer traditionally said upon waking -- Modah Ani.  The focus of the prayer is gratitude to G-d for life and for waking to a new day.

Birdsongs and Comfort

Upon my waking

The pale light of dawn filters through the trees and curtains

Bird songs fill the air

Wrapped in a blanket of comfort and love

With you by my side

In the still of the morning –

Modah ani –

I am grateful

For the gentle reminders

That the world can be—

That I can be—

As those birds

Singing my song of joy and love

As the new day arrives
