This book outlines the historic tension between the ideas of Plato and Aristotle and how that tension manifests itself throughout Western history. While it is a very long book, the explanations are clear and comprehensible. I feel as if I understand much more about Western philosophy generally and much more about how the ideas of these two classical philosophers shape and influence the ideas that came after them.

I enjoyed reading this book, even though it took me quite a while. I had read the Greek philosophers back in college in some depth. As a student of literature, I hit some of the others either as historical artifacts or as literary critics. But now I feel as if I have a bigger overview to shape my understanding of the trends that have worked through the history.
